What should I do if someone breaks into my account?
If someone broke into your account and changed your password, you should be able to reclaim control of your journal. However, this requires that you still have access to an e-mail account that you had previously validated for your InsaneJournal account. The steps below describe how to regain control of an secure your InsaneJournal account. It is important that you follow them in order, to ensure that your account is as secure as possible.
Before you resecure your InsaneJournal account, first make sure your email account is secure. Your InsaneJournal account can only be as secure as your email account it.
If you are pretty sure that your email account is secure, but are not positive, you can always change the password on your email account. You will have to contact your email provider for instructions on how to do that.
If you email account has been compromised, you must first resolve that issue before you can secure your InsaneJournal account.
As your password can always be emailed to the first email address you used to validate your account, that email address must be secure or else your InsaneJournal account will never be secure.
Recovering Your Password
Do not request your password be emailed to you until you are sure that your email account is secure. Even if your password was changed you should still be able to recover it. InsaneJournal will email your password to you if you go to the Lost Information page and enter your username and any email address that you have validated on your account.
Unfamiliar Email Addresses
Once you are sure that your email account has been secured, you need to go to the Email Management Page to check if there are any email addresses that either you don't own, or are unfamiliar to you. If you do not see any, you can proceed to the next section.
If your email address was changed by someone who broke into your account, you should change the email address on your InsaneJournal account to one you used prior to your account being broken into. You can do this at your Journal Settings page. You will then need to re-validate your email address. Then you should go back to the Email Management page and remove any addresses that you do not control from your account's history.
Changing Your Password
Now that your email account is secure and you have your password, you should Change your password.
Make sure that your password is not the same as the one you use for your email account, and is not easy to guess. We suggest that you use a combination of letters and numbers and do not base it on a dictionary word.
Your account is now secured
After you have completed the above steps, your account should now be secure. If any of your entries, user info, or userpics have been changed or deleted you will need to manually correct this. They cannot be restored to a previous version from the server.
