» Why can't I access pages on InsaneJournal?

We understand the frustrations that these problems might be causing you, and the administrators of InsaneJournal are constantly upgrading the performances of the free servers to meet the needs of the growing number of users.

When you encounter an error like 'Sorry, the page you were trying to view failed to load', this is normally due to a high volume of InsaneJournal users hitting the free servers during peak hours. Peak load times frequently occur between 8pm UTC (GMT) & 6am UTC (GMT).

If this is the case, wait 5 to 15 minutes before hitting the refresh button. Constantly hitting refresh contributes to the high load that the servers might already be experiencing. Another suggestion is to try accessing the servers during non-peak hours.

» Why are there errors when I try to validate my e-mail address?

The following notice appears if you do not have the complete URL in the location or address bar of your browser:

"Error
One or more errors occured processing your request. Please go back, correct the necessary information, and submit your data again.

You cannot go to this page directly, you must have a registration URL to complete this registration."

The URL that InsaneJournal includes will look something like this: https://www.insanejournal.com/confirm/501286.9ssksbn4aa2kr7h (note: void, shown as example)

If you are getting an error when you try to validate, try copy/pasting or typing the confirmation URL into your browser's address/location bar.

Validation URLs expire if they are not used within one week of them being sent. If it has been over one week since the confirmation e-mail was sent to you, or if you are having problems receiving the validation e-mail, please see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12 for instructions on having another one sent to you. The e-mail you receive will contain a new validation URL which you can then use to finalize your account set-up.

» Why does my journal (or friends view) suddenly no longer display correctly?

If yourself or another user posts incorrect HTML, it may affect the display of entries on your journal or friends view, by causing them to display in a different size, colour, cause strange tables and other effects too numerous to mention.

The most common problem with incorrect display is however when you are suddenly required to scroll sideways.

There are three main causes:

* Someone posted a large image (the most frequent reason).
* Someone posted a long string of text with no breaks, like a long line of "hahaha" without spaces. Browsers attempt to keep the entire string of text on the same line, thus causing the layout of the page to stretch beyond normal.
* Someone posted a poll with a large text entry box.

To avoid this:

* Use the cut tag when posting large images, long strings of text or complicated HTML displays. See https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=49 for more details.
* Occasionally enter a space in any long strings of text
* Shorten the text
* Limit the size of any picture posted in an entry
* Limit your poll's text entry boxes to a smaller size (Maxlength will not affect this; you can leave that as large as you need, up to 255 characters)
* Check your post for faulty HTML.

If the entry is yours, you can edit it by following the instructions detailed in https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=2 .

If the entry is on your Friends page, you could ask the person who posted it to change the entry by editing it, adding an tag, or removing it altogether (https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=3).

Alternatively, you can can create a custom Friends group (https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=62) named "Default View", placing everyone in that view but the person who has posted the entry. This will temporarily remove the friend from your Friends page, but not from your actual Friends list. After some time, you can remove the Friends group, as the post causing the problem will no longer be displayed. You can also temporarily remove the friend from your list, or simply wait for the post to scroll off your Friends page.

» Why is my entry not showing up where it should?

There are several reasons why your entries might not be showing up as you intended. Here are some of the most common:

* If your entry is viewable in your own journal but not on other users' Friends pages, the problem may be that it was backdated. (Backdated entries always appear in the Calendar and Day views, and will also appear in the Recent Entries view if the date is within the range currently appearing on the page.) See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=55 for more information on the "backdate entry" function.

* If the entry can only be seen on your friends' Friends pages, the entry is most likely misdated. Look at your journal page and carefully check the dates (including the year) of the most recent entries that appear. See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=67 for more details.

* If you are not logged in, try logging in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) and going to your journal page. If the entry now appears with an icon of a lock or an eye, or the notation "Security: Friends" or "Security: Private", you've set the security level of the entry to 'friends only' or 'private'. See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63 for more details on security levels.

* It's possible that you are viewing a cached version of your page. Click the 'Reload' or 'Refresh' button on your browser to bring up the latest version of your page. For more information on how to deal with outdated pages, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=68.

* As InsaneJournal grows, the number of posts being handled at the same time also increases in scale. At any one time, there may be dozens of connections open to the servers, and within a few minutes, as many as few dozen journals may be updated. There may be a bit of lag between when you post an entry and when InsaneJournal is ready to display it. Refresh your page after a few seconds to see if this corrects the problem.

If none of the above suggestions resolves your problem, you can visit the Support page at http://www.insanejournal.com/support/submit.bml and submit a request for help.

» Why are my journal entries showing an incorrect date/time?

If the date or time of an entry is showing up incorrectly, this just means that the clock on your computer is now, or was at some time, set to the wrong date or time. This could affect all posts made after the incorrect post. First, make sure that the date, time, and time zone are all now set correctly on your computer. Then edit the date and time of the entries that are incorrect by doing the following:

USING THE WEB INTERFACE:

Go to https://www.insanejournal.com/editjournal.bml and select the date that the entry is currently showing on your journal. Manually type in the correct date/time of the journal entry and save your changes.

USING A DOWNLOADED CLIENT:

Many clients available for download include the ability to edit previous journal entries. For more information on your preferred client, consult its documentation or its menu options.

» Why are my images not displaying? What is remote loading?

The most common reason for images not displaying properly, whether it be in journal entries or in styles or overrides, is due to remote loading issues.

Remote loading refers to images being referenced and displayed by other websites. Many popular free web space providers no longer allow remote loading, due to the bandwidth issues involved.

Normally, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will offer you some free web space as a part of your monthly account. You should check with them and find out if they allow remote loading. If your ISP doesn't offer web space, or doesn't allow remote loading, you will need to search for other sites and review their policies to determine if they allow remote loading. In some cases, you may need to pay a small fee for the service.

InsaneJournal cannot suggest image hosting services, as their policies can change with little to no notice. However, InsaneJournal hopes to offer its own image hosting service within the next year.

Make sure that you either control the web space you are using, or have permission from the owner of the web space to use their images. Just because an image is on the Internet doesn't mean that it's available for use by anyone.

Once you have found an image host, see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=6 for information on how to add a picture to your journal entries, or https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=48 for information on how to add a background image to your journal.

If your images are not displaying, but you know your webspace allows remote loading, you may also want to verify that you've typed the address of the image correctly, and have used the right filename.

» Why can't I see the most recent version of a page? Why is my friends view not updating?

If you aren't seeing the most recent versions of pages on InsaneJournal -- for instance, if you know that your friends have updated more recently than is showing on your Friends page, or you access a page and see the message that your updates were successful before you've made any updates -- you are most likely viewing an old version of the page in your browser cache.

Try hitting Refresh or Reload in your browser. If hitting Refresh or Reload does not help, your browser may provide a function to attempt a "hard" or "forced" refresh, or you may need to clear your browser's cache. Information on this can be found in your browser's documentation, or by reading this article in the LiveJournal HowTo journal: https://www.livejournal.com/users/howto/21595.html, provided as a courtesy by support volunteers on the LiveJournal site.

If you are having problems with an entry that is not showing up where you expect it to appear, please see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=69 for other reasons that this can occur. In particular, please note that if someone you list as a friend posts an entry that is backdated, the entry will not appear on your friends page. See https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=55 for more information about backdated entries.

» Why do I receive an "invalid cookies" error, and how can I fix it?

If you have recently upgraded to a Paid Account, recently had your Paid Account expire, or frequently switch back and forth between a Paid account and a Free account, you may receive an "invalid cookie" error when accessing pages on InsaneJournal.

If you receive a message "Invalid cookies. Try logging out and logging back in," log out of InsaneJournal and log back in. If this does not help clear the error, you should delete all of your InsaneJournal cookies and then log back in. Information on deleting cookies can be found in your browser's documentation.

» Why can't I stay logged into InsaneJournal, and what can I do to solve this problem?

If you receive problems staying logged into InsaneJournal -- for instance, if you are randomly logged out when moving from page to page -- it is most likely a problem with your browser or your Internet connection. There are several steps you can take that may work to solve this problem.

First, clear your web browser's cache files. Information on how to do this can be found here: https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=68.

Next, log out of InsaneJournal, delete all InsaneJournal cookies in your browser, and then make sure that your browser is properly accepting cookies. Information on deleting cookies can be found here: https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=125. Information on making sure that your browser is accepting cookies can be found in your browser's help files.

You will also need to make sure that the date and time of your computer is correct. If your computer's clock is significantly ahead or behind the time on InsaneJournal's servers, you won't be able to remain logged in.

If you are trying to use the "never expire" login mode, you may need to switch back and forth several times between "when browser closes" (session only) and "never" (never expire) when logging in. You can do this by changing the option on https://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml and then hitting Change Options.

Using the "Bind to IP Address" option does not work if your IP address changes regularly (such as every time you make a new connection to your ISP). If you have selected this option and cannot remain logged into InsaneJournal, unselect it when you are logging in; it may help.

Also, you may be able to remain logged in by posting a comment and checking the "login" box, rather than by logging in using the https://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml page.

If none of this helps you, you will need to contact your Internet provider and let them know that you cannot remain logged into a website that uses cookies for authentication, and ask them for help troubleshooting the problem.

» Why can't I update with really long entries?

If you can update with short entries, but not long ones, your computer's MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit, the maximum amount of data that can be sent in one packet over your network) may be set too high. This situation is most commonly found when your computer is set up to share an Internet connection with another computer in the house, or if you connect to your Internet provider over PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet, common on ADSL connections). Information on finding the proper MTU value for your Internet connection can be found by performing a query for "find maximum MTU setting" with your favorite search engine.

InsaneJournal can't help you resolve the problem; if you cannot resolve it yourself you will need to contact your Internet service provider or network administrator, or consult the documentation for your operating system.

For information on InsaneJournal's limitations on data, see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=25 .

» Why am I receiving errors when I try to send a text message?

If you are receiving errors when trying to send a text message, then try logging out (https://www.insanejournal.com/logout.bml). You will then need to clear your cache and delete your InsaneJournal cookies. Information on deleting cookies and clearing your cache can be found in your browser's documentation. Close and re-open another browser, then log in (https://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) and re-send the text message.
