» Why did my account get deleted by itself?

If your account has automatically been set to deleted status, it is because you have not validated your e-mail address within the first 5 days of your journal creation.

You will first need to validate your e-mail address [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12]. Then, undelete your account [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=14]. Following these procedures will prevent your validated account from being automatically deleted again in the future.

InsaneJournal has implemented this policy to prevent users from creating multiple accounts with no intentions of using them.

» Why does InsaneJournal have ads? How can I get rid of them?

InsaneJournal has advertisements as an extra source of funding in order to keep the site running smoothly. InsaneJournal is able to stay online, in part, due to generous users who feel our service is worth paying for. Unfortunately, this income is not enough to pay for the costs of servers and bandwidth. To supplement this income, InsaneJournal uses advertising on its website. However, please note that advertisements will never be shown on your journal; they will only appear on the site pages.

Removing the advertisements is not possible with a Free Patient account. However, upgrading to a Permanently Insane account will remove the advertisements from the site while logged in to your account.

» How are the account types different from each other?

» What is validation? How do I validate my email address?

Validation is a method of ensuring that there is an actual user behind created accounts. It is important for users to validate their email address because it's crucial to account security, several features aren't available to non-validated users, and your account will eventually be deleted if you do not validate.

To validate your email address, click on a confirmation URL given to you upon account creation or changing your account's previous email address.

» How do I change the e-mail address for my InsaneJournal account?

You can change your e-mail address and many other journal settings by visiting [https://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml].

You will need to re-validate your e-mail address. If you didn't automatically receive a new e-mail to do so, see [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12].

If you want to remove any validated e-mail addresses that you have used for your InsaneJournal account (so your password can't be sent to that address), go to [https://www.insanejournal.com/tools/emailmanage.bml] for more information.

Please note that the e-mail address you first used to create your account cannot be deleted. To delete any other e-mail addresses in your history you must be using an e-mail older in your e-mail history than the one you wish to delete.

» How do I change my password?

To change your password, visit [https://www.insanejournal.com/changepassword.bml].

The current e-mail address for your InsaneJournal account must be validated [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12] in order to successfully change the password. This is enforced due to security issues.

Information on creating a secure password can be found at [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=37].

» How do I get my lost username/password back?

If you have lost your username or password, visit [https://www.insanejournal.com/lostinfo.bml] to receive an e-mail containing this information.

Due to security issues, InsaneJournal will only send your password to the e-mail address currently entered in the Personal Information for your account, or to an e-mail address that has been previously validated for use with the account. If you no longer have access to the currently registered e-mail address or to any previously validated e-mail address, you will not be able to recover your username or password. For more information about validation, see [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12].

This is an automated process; therefore, InsaneJournal staff and Support volunteers do not have access to your password and will not be able to provide it to you.

If you are unable to regain access to your account because you have forgotten your username or password, and no longer have access to the e-mail address currently registered with the account or to any previously validated address, you may wish to create a new journal. For instructions on creating a new account, see [https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=11].

If you remember your username and password, but no longer have access to the e-mail address currently registered with the account or to any previously validated address, you should update your e-mail address immediately. For instructions on changing your e-mail address, see [https://insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=19].

» How should I secure my password and help prevent other people from logging into my account?

First of all:

* Never share your password with anybody else. InsaneJournal will never initiate contact to ask for your password or to request you to log in due to account inactivity.
* Use a password that cannot be easily guessed. A combination of letters (both lowercase and uppercase) and numbers is recommended. Avoid using the same password that you use on any of your other Internet accounts.

Go to https://www.insanejournal.com/changepassword.bml in order to change your password.

There are a few other simple precautions users should take to help further secure their InsaneJournal sessions:

* If you are using a computer that other people can access, your login should be set to expire when your browser closes. This will require you to manually log in the next time you use InsaneJournal. If your login is currently set to never expire, or auto-login, you can logout by clicking the "Logout" link at the top of the page, and then quitting your browser. Go to https://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml to change your login/logout settings.

* After logging out through the "Logout" link, quit your browser. Your logout will not be completely secure until you have quit your browser. After quitting the browser, it may be a good idea to restart the browser and come back to https://www.insanejournal.com/ to double-check and make sure you aren't being logged in automatically.

* Make sure the e-mail address you have listed with InsaneJournal is secure. If another person has access to read your e-mail, they will also have the ability to retrieve your InsaneJournal password. Go to https://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml to check or change the e-mail address for your InsaneJournal account.

* If you have downloaded an InsaneJournal client on your computer, it is best not to have it set on auto-login with 'Remember Password' checked if the computer is accessible to other people.

» How do I change the username of my account?

It is possible to change the username of personal and asylum journals by using a rename token. These are for sale at the price of $5USD [https://www.insanejournal.com/rename/]. If you would rather create a new account, you can do so by visiting [https://www.insanejournal.com/create.bml]. However, your new journal will be clear of all journal entries. If you use a rename token, all your entries will remain on your journal.

» How do I delete/undelete my entire account?

If you want to delete or undelete your entire journal, log in and visit:

https://www.insanejournal.com/accountstatus.bml

To delete your journal, change the Journal Activation Status to "Deleted" and click on Save Changes. Your journal will be saved for 14 days in case you change your mind, but will not be available during that time.

To undelete your journal before it has been purged, go back to the same place and change your Journal Activation Status to "Activated". Click on Save Changes.

If your account has automatically been deleted, see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=135 for why and how to prevent this from happening again in the future.

As stated in the InsaneJournal Terms of Service (https://www.insanejournal.com/legal/tos.bml), "Self-committed" [paid] and Permanently Insane accounts are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you have a Self-committed or Permanently Insane account and choose to delete your journal, you will not be able to transfer the remainder of your paid time to another account, nor will you be able to receive a refund for it.

» Someone broke into my InsaneJournal account!

If someone broke into your account and changed your password, you can still usually reclaim control of your journal. You need access to an e-mail account that you had previously validated for your InsaneJournal account.

If your e-mail address has also been broken into, you will have to solve that problem before dealing with getting your stolen InsaneJournal account back. Security of users' own e-mail accounts is beyond InsaneJournal's responsibility and ability, and you may wish to talk to whoever is hosting your e-mail account.

Your InsaneJournal account's security is based upon your e-mail account's security. If you believe that your e-mail account is secure, but are not positive, you should always change your e-mail account password before changing your InsaneJournal password.

If someone broke into your account, first go to https://www.insanejournal.com/tools/emailmanage.bml and check whether there are any unfamiliar -email addresses there. If your e-mail address hasn't been changed, first immediately change your e-mail account password, and then your InsaneJournal password. Your account is now as secure as you can make it.

If someone broke into your account and changed your e-mail address, change your e-mail account password and then change the e-mail on your InsaneJournal account to the one you had previously used to validate with. Re-validate your e-mail address, and then visit https://www.insanejournal.com/tools/emailmanage.bml to remove the intruder's address from your account's status history. NOTE: You will need to re-validate an older e-mail address before you can delete a more recent address, so in order to get rid of the intruder's e-mail address, you'll need to re-validate your own old e-mail address - not a new one.

Assuming you have access to your e-mail account and it is secure, follow these steps to reclaim your journal:

1. Go to https://www.insanejournal.com/lostinfo.bml .
2. Insert your username and e-mail account and ask it to send you the current password.
3. Use that password to log into the account and check your Personal Information at https://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml .
4. Follow the steps above to see what you need to do if your e-mail address has been changed.
5. Change the password for the account at https://www.insanejournal.com/changepassword.bml .

If proper precautions are taken, your account security will never be compromised in the first place. Users are responsible for the security of their own accounts. Preventing any journal break-ins is by far the BEST way to ensure your InsaneJournal remains secure.

For more information on password security, please see https://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=37 .
