| laurel canyon | Laurel Canyon is a canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. It was first settled in the 1920s, and became a part of the city of Los Angeles in 1923.
Community life is focused on its central thoroughfare, Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Unlike other nearby canyon neighborhoods, Laurel Canyon has houses lining one side of the main street most of the way up to Mulholland Drive. There are many side roads that branch off the main canyon, but most of them are not through streets, reinforcing the self-contained nature of the neighborhood. Some of the main side streets are Mount Olympus, Kirkwood, Wonderland, and Lookout Mountain Avenue. The zip code for at least part of the neighborhood is 90046.
Laurel Canyon found itself a nexus of counterculture activity and attitudes in the 1960s, becoming famous as home to many of L.A.'s top rock musicians, such as Frank Zappa, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Love. Joni Mitchell, living in the home in the Canyon that was immortalized in the song, "Our House", written by her then-lover, Graham Nash, would use the area and its denizens as inspiration for her third album, Ladies of the Canyon. The bohemian spirit from that time period endures to this day, and every year residents gather for a group photograph at the country market. (Wikipedia) | | game details | • laurel canyon is a very discerning pb roleplay game. building a community of interesting, unique, complex characters with engaging storylines is as important (if not more so) than accepting talented writers. if you are accustomed to creating one-dimensional, uninspired characters and being accepted on your writing skills, you will need to step it up to be accepted into this game.
• the storyline community ( 90046) is available for you to work out existing and established relationships, however, you are responsible for developing stories and relationships for your character in-game through roleplaying. you must take a proactive approach to interacting with others in order to thrive in this game. if everyone waits for someone else to reach out to them, or if people fail to take risks, the community will die.
• since most of the living accommodations in the hollywood hills are on the expensive side, if your character is living in one of the hillside mansions, make sure to account for that somewhere in your character development. alternatively, your character can share housing, or live in a less expensive apartment or condo off of laurel canyon blvd.
• that said, because of the bohemian nature of the neighborhood, faux celebs will be allowed as long as it does not become your focus. things like interviews, articles, and album releases are not appropriate material for this game. we will not be holding or using artists to represent faux celeb characters' voices, film roles or auxiliary credits, or accepting claims on any existing creative work. if you choose to play a character with mainstream recognition for any of these things, we suggest either inventing your own credits, or describing their work without specifying their roles, films, album names, "sounds like", etc. since these things will not be tracked or otherwise organized at the mod level. also, if you want to play a popular hip hop artist, for example, you must be able to address the reasons they would choose to live in a secluded neighborhood with noise ordinances. likewise, you should be prepared to explain how an indie musician or actor who's just starting out would be able to afford a fancy hillside studio or home if that's their only means of income. edited 5/16/08
• there will be a character age minimum of twenty-one years old, with the expectation that older characters will act their age (unless not doing so is a deliberate character choice). choosing an age-appropriate pb should go without question at this point. to be clear, pbing miley cyrus as a twenty-one year old who behaves like a sixteen year old to try to get around the age restriction isn't going to fly.
• this community endeavors to use scenes/threads as its primary method of interaction, however, instant messaging and posting to the friends page is also highly encouraged. there are no subcommunities; all threads, logs, random, lyric, etc posts are to be done in your own character journal. if you must post out of character, do so in your own character journal and mark it as such.
• you will be expected to post either a traditional first person update or a public third person scene once every three weeks. the details of the scene as well as who may reply (if anyone) is at the writer's discretion.
• please follow the general rules of roleplaying you are used to: be excellent to each other, no god-modding, treat delicate topics with respect, be realistic, etc. |
