Stolen from [info]red_day_dawning, First line of last 25 fics you wrote and try to find a pattern. And since the last, like, ten posts have been from the same co-written fic, I'm only counting my first line of that fic. Also some of these aren't posted yet, because frankly I'm just lazy enough to look in Google Docs instead of poking backwards twenty-five whole fics.

Last twenty-five fics...will there be a pattern? )

Um...Seriously, I have no idea what pattern might be emerging here. If there is one. I do try to begin in media res as often as possible, though...

CRIMINAL MINDS FIC: Miles To Go Before We Sleep - Morgan/Reid (JJ/Will, Garcia/Kevin)

I've posted this before, but wanted to update now that we're up to seven parts posted.

Title: Miles To Go Before We Sleep, part one
Authors: [info]innerslytherin and [info]severity_softly
Pairing: Morgan/Reid
Rating: PG-13 this part (up to NC-17 for the entire fic)
Summary: After Reid goes off the rails in Texas, Morgan decides Reid needs a friend to support him through whatever he's going through. Several cases and "awesomely" bad sci-fi flicks later, they both realize "friendship" isn't exactly what they want...but sorting through the baggage that stands in the way of a closer relationship is more difficult than either of them expected. Starting immediately after "Elephant's Memory" and running beyond the end of "Lo-fi", this is a multi-chaptered, non-WIP fic.
Word count: this part, ~9100; overall, ~130K
Spoilers: Entire series - specifically Profiler, Profiled, The Big Game/Revelations, Elephant's Memory, In Heat, Tabula Rasa, and Lo-fi
Warnings: Overall: UST, references to past sexual abuse, drug use/references to past drug use
Notes: Written in RP format. Not currently AU, but it will be after season four starts, as we're writing our own ending to Lo-fi. :) A million thanks to [info]mnemosyne_1 for being an awesome beta! :D

Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
Part Five
Part Six
Part Seven 1/2
Part Seven 2/2

More parts will be posted this week. It's not a WIP, but we're posting in parts because it's so long.

Traveling Again

I'm heading for Chicago for the weekend! No, not to Terminus, but for the Cubs game on Saturday. Going to hang with my college roommate all weekend, hopefully have dinner with another roommate, take in the Field Museum, and generally have fun. I catch the train in about nine hours, which means I should really get to sleep. See you all on Monday!

Thank you Panera for the WIFI

However, dear Panera employee who is currently sweeping my ANKLES,

IT IS NOT NINE O'CLOCK YET! I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT THAT YOU WANT TO GO HOME, YOU ARE STUCK HERE FOR FORTY MORE MINUTES! On top of that, there are three other computers here, and a chatty couple curled up together on the loveseat ten feet from me. NONE OF US ARE LEAVING.

Go away and sweep someone else's ankles.

Obviously my modem has not arrived, despite there being a "two business days" phrase bandied about. I am terribly sad that I haven't been able to play WoW or work on collaborative writing with [info]severity_softly.

Oh, I take it back, the chatty couple, JUST AFTER I TYPED THAT, got up and walked away. Drat, now broomy girl will think she's been effective.

I wish I didn't utterly hate everything Panera sells. I can never find anything I want to eat here. I ordered a chocolate chip bagel and have been surprisingly unhungry, despite that I only ate a quarter of it. I have, however, consumed most of my large Dr. Pepper. Huzzah for Dr. Pepper. I love it so.

ETA: Holy crap, you guys, I just accidentally deleted this whole post because my mother's laptop has a FUNCTION key where the CONTROL key should be. Thank God I found CTRL and CTRL-Zed it, because your lives would be ruined if you didn't get to read this. No, I haven't taken any drugs, legal or otherwise, why are you looking at me like that? I'm just high on teh intarwebz.

Um...yikes

I just found a Bones/Criminal Minds crossover fic wherein the pairing was Zack Addy/Spencer Reid. Prior to the season finale of Bones, that would've been lovely. Now it just makes me a little queasy, considering the bizarre fate of poor Zack.

*sigh*

It's possible I'm just this side of snookered tonight. The line between "just enough" and "a wee bit much" regarding Crown Royal in the Coke is sometimes invisible until you cross it. But this is expensive whiskey, and I'm not wasting any of it.

That reminds me. A poll. I haven't done one of those in ages. And my best friend and I have been arguing about something, but since she has no online friendships and no comprehension of why mine are so important to me, I don't consider her opinion valid on this subject.

This has been the stormiest summer

I have no idea what the averages or records are regarding severe weather in Indiana over the summer, but seriously, I don't remember any summer being this stormy in a long time. There are flash flood warnings out again, and just here we've had a huge amount of rain today.

Of course this would be the weekend I was helping someone move, but fortunately we got the truck loaded up last night and parked in the garage, and then between the morning and afternoon storms we managed to drive the stuff up and unload it. In between storms it was ungodly hot, so not the ideal weekend for moving all around. Then again I did get free pizza, so I can't complain too much.

And during the storms this morning I read an entire book. Granted it was a ridiculous romance novel, but it passed the time anyway.

FICLET: In Between the Lightning Flashes (Remus/Peter) PG

Speaking of 800 words... [info]800_words had the big reveal today! Fics were posted anonymously on Monday, though honestly anyone who read them could have guessed which one was mine, just by pairing alone. *grin* I'll post a link in my next entry. There are twelve other fantastic fics at that community, and rather than listing any particular ones, I'll just tell you that all but one of those fics are 800 words, and the one that's 1600 words is WELL worth reading, even if it is twice as long. *grin* They're all Marauder-related, and I know a couple of Peter fans on my flist will really love a couple of them.

Rejections

Not one but TWO rejections today, one for the urban fantasy novel and one for a traditional fantasy short story. Sadly enough, it's the story I had accepted by a magazine that went under before publishing it, so it's the story I've always felt had the most hope.

*sigh* The novel "didn't resonate". Sometimes I wonder if anything I write really resonates. Or maybe I just need to learn to resonate when talking about what I write...

King Edmund...*cough* I mean, Prince Caspian

Went to see Prince Caspian today finally. What's funny is this has never been my favourite of the Narnia books, but man, did I love this movie! The acting was brilliant, the scenery was beautiful... They did some inventing, but I was pleased with it, because it was true to the spirit of the book, the underlying theme of which is how when we do things our way, we screw up bigtime, but when we do things God's way, they go right.

I was, however, distracted from the heavenly themes of the movie by Little Mr No-Longer-Jailbait, Skandar Keynes. Okay, I've always been an Edmund fangirl, but dude.

Wherein I spam you with pictures of a 16-year-old I should not find quite as hot as I do. )

Random things before bed

My weekend was pretty good, despite illness running roughshod over the family. Friday night, Mom & Dad picked me up after work and we drove down to Spring Mill State Park, where we stayed in the inn. I'd been draggy and sick to my stomach for a few days. Friday I barely ate anything, skipped lunch, and mostly just ate mashed potatoes for dinner when we got there around 7. By 8 I was in bed and asleep, and I didn't get up until 8 the next morning. I did feel better, finally, though, except for a headache. Mom and I went for a hike after breakfast while Dad napped, then Mom started feeling sick, so she lay down in our room for a while before we checked out. Then we did some more hiking, watched the mill demonstrations of grinding corn meal and cutting boards, then hiked a little more.

Mom and I explored Donaldson Cave without Dad this time. There are times being a fantasy writer can really be a detriment to one's peace of mind. When one is standing at the mouth of a very small, long, dark passage with only a Maglite in one's hands...that would be one of those times.

We stayed in a hotel in Edinburgh Saturday night, just because none of us felt like driving another three hours to get home. We were home by noon yesterday and Dad and his brother went to visit Gedna, only to discover she'd gone out with her sisters. So they came back here instead. It was a nice, long, relaxed visit with my uncle, minus his wife and kids, which was a relief.

Other stuff:

I need to start making a list of two productive things to do after work every night. And then sticking to it.

Embarassingly enough, World of Warcraft is sucking up a lot of time these days. >.> This is not what I meant to be doing with my time. Then again, as long as Dad is buying my subscription so I will play online with him, I will keep playing. I still think Guild Wars is prettier.

I realized tonight that I have a Snupin fic that I've never posted. I'll have to see about getting that betaed and posted. I also really need to finish Redemption. I have been drifting out of the fandom for the past several months, aside from a couple of collaborative works and my RPG, but I still want to finish Redemption.

I have another three days to get my novel submission packet put together and sent to the first agent on my list. This is a self-imposed deadline, but I'd better make it. It's bloody hard turning a 110,000 word novel into six paragraphs. Honestly, the one-paragraph "back of the book" part was loads easier.

I am so sleepy I'm going to fall out of my chair. Time to kick the cat off my bed and sleep.

Thank you, Supreme Court

Someone I greatly respect just criticized my state for it's "backward" and "disenfranchising" behaviour regarding voter laws. I didn't want to start shit with this person, because...well, I'm too tired. But I had to get this out somewhere.

I just have to say that as an Indiana resident, I'm very glad I have to show ID to vote. I don't want anyone else going in and claiming my name to vote. (Granted, I live in a small community where no one could pretend to be me, but the principal is the same.) And the state is issuing free photo IDs, so it is NOT disenfranchising anyone. For people who say they have no way to get to the BMV to get their ID...well, how the bloody HELL are they getting to the voting places then, eh?

And on that second cranky note of the day, I'm going to bed. My room is freezing and the quilt looks very warm.

Black Hawk Down

The following is a rather lengthy entry, part book review, part history lesson, part reflection, about modern warfare and the US as a military power. It's relevant not only to the Iraq war but also the situation in Darfur. Because as Santayana said, those who don't study the past...

I just finished reading Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden. The book is about the largely-overlooked Battle of Mogadishu (The Battle of the Black Sea), which happened in 1994--my senior year in high school. The battle took place just a couple of weeks before my seventeenth birthday, and the majority of the men participating in that battle were very close to my age.

Background )

3-4 October 1994, or 'Fuckin' Irene' )

Casualties and Resolution )

A couple of years ago I had a discussion with someone who was all worked up about Rwanda and couldn't understand why the US didn't do anything to stop the genocide there. I tried to tell her about Somalia, but she didn't seem to get it. In his epilogue, Mark Bowden speaks to the impact of Somalia as well--the lessons to be taken away, and the questions it raises.

The impact of Somalia )

I don't have any answers to the predicament of being American. I know it often gets us looked on with scorn, hatred, or annoyance. I know we're often perceived as being arrogant. And sometimes it does feel arrogant to say that we should go and plant little mini-Americas, complete with Jeffersonian democracy, in cultures that aren't used to operating that way. But don't we have a responsibility to keep people from brutally murdering each other? Shouldn't we protect the Kurds from Saddam? Shouldn't we stop the brutality in Darfur?

Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War
The book itself was a fascinating, well-written, riveting account of the battle, and Bowden received a great deal of cooperation from those involved while writing it. He has been overwhelmed with thanks from the soldiers who were there, and has spoken to elite military groups across the US, as well as the CIA. Just the fact that I read a non-fiction book of 430+ pages in less than a week says a lot about the quality of writing and the level at which it engages you. Of course, it also helped that it was a battle I remember taking place, and spawned a movie that I've seen more than once. In any case, I would highly recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in military history, US foreign policy, or Africa.

Far From Grace: Peter's Tale

This is a not-too-detailed summary, with links, of [info]peter_ffg's story in [info]farfromgracerpg, an AU Marauders-Era game. I've left out some subplot information, and my coverage of Remus' side of the story is a bit spotty, but I've already stayed up way too late doing this, and am about to fall asleep in my chair. Without further ado...

As the game begins early in November 1978, James Potter is tragically killed during a pick-up Quidditch match with his best friends, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. Although they don't know who did it, they know it is the Killing Curse, and that it therefore has to have been one of the Death Eaters. James is buried on 15 November.

A few days later, Peter goes to visit Remus for the first time since the funeral. Peter is struggling with guilt over having murdered one of his best friends at Voldemort's behest, and is also grieving for his best friend. He and Remus cry together and drink until they pass out.

The next week, Peter stops by the cottage Remus and Sirius share and finds Remus reading poetry. Not recognising Walt Whitman's name, he gets Remus to read it to him, and they discuss poetry. Peter finds himself attracted to Remus--a disturbing and frightening problem that has been cropping up from time to time lately--and suggests they go to a Diagon Alley pub for dinner.

On 2 December, the remaining Marauders + Lily get together to discuss what they can do to find out who killed James. Sirius decides to attempt to reinfiltrate his family. Peter attempts to dissuade him, not wanting to have to turn him in, but Lily sides with Sirius, and the matter is settled.

A week later, Remus stops by Scrivenshaft's, where Peter works, and they go to the Three Broomsticks. They rough-house a bit in the middle of Hogsmeade and find themselves blushing for no apparent reason. A few days later Peter invites Remus to dinner at his mum's house. More lovely UST ensues.

Lily invites everyone to a Christmas Party. Peter and Remus go shopping for Christmas presents and Peter accidentally outs himself to Remus following an embarrassing visit to the Adults Only room in Zonko's Joke Shop.

At the Order Christmas Party, Peter and Remus go outside for some fresh air and wind up trapped by magical mistletoe. Peter proceeds to drink himself stupid. (This is a comment-threaded scene.)

It takes Peter over a week, but on 3 January he finally goes to see Remus to face the consequences of Mistletoe. He and Remus clear up a few misunderstandings.

Cut for length )

Cut for spoilers )

Earthquake!

We just had an earthquake! I was sitting down and Mom was in bed and Dad was in the garage, and I jumped up and ran out into the hallway and Merlin was flipping out, staring around him with wide eyes. It was actually a 5.4 magnitude with the epicenter in southern Illinois, about 200 miles away. Merlin is still freaked out fifteen minutes later.

That was the second earthquake I've ever felt here in Indiana.

Thursday's hearing, which marked the fourth time in the past year that House lawmakers tackled the issue, has become an issue that has taken on more relevance as Americans face rising unemployment, rising inflation and have had to increasingly rely on their credit cards to make ends meet.

Based on the most recent data from the Federal Reserve, the average American family carries an average of $2,200 in credit card debt.

Critics have charged that many credit card issuers engaged in "unfair" practices such as raising interest rates on debt even when consumers pay on time or imposing excessive fees.

It's about damn time somebody did something about this.

Lawmakers were captivated by the credit card horror stories presented by three individuals Thursday, including that of Susan Wones, a Denver woman who said the rates on her multiple credit cards spiraled higher even though she stayed below her credit limit.

Someone plz to b writin me this fic nao

Was listening to my unofficial Criminal Minds soundtrack the other day, which includes "You Wanna Make a Memory" by Bon Jovi. That reminded me of how much I freaking LOVE Bon Jovi. So today I broke out Crossroads. Listening to Bon Jovi brought me to my favourite song, which is "Blaze of Glory". That, of course, reminded me of two favourite movies of my younger days, Young Guns and Young Guns II (I was a Christian Slater fangirl). Which made me think, DUDE. Billy the Kid would've been an AWESOME unsub.

I now want a cracky AU CM/Young Guns fic: Young genius Dr Spencer Reid and his former Buffalo Soldier amor Derek Morgan take on Billy the Kid and the Regulators.

Seriously, guys. This is the shit.
