» How do I add pictures on my journal?

In order to insert images into your journal entries or userinfo, they must first be uploaded to a webspace provider that allows remote loading. You can not display a picture directly from your computer's hard disk. More information on remote loading and image loading requirements can be found by visiting this FAQ.

To insert an image to your journal entry or userinfo, use the following img tag where you want the image to appear:

<img src="http://www.imagehoster.com/imagename.jpg" alt="Picture explanation here">

Within the code, "http://www.imagehoster.com/imagename.jpg" must be replaced by the actual URL of the image. The [alt="Picture explanation here"] is optional, and will show the text in the quotation marks when the mouse cursor is hovering over the image.

You can also tell the browser how tall and wide the image is. To do this, use the following code:

<img src="http://www.imagehoster.com/imagename.jpg" alt="Picture explanation here" height="y" width="x">

Replace "y" with the height of the image (in pixels) from top to bottom, and "x" with the width of the image (in pixels) from right to left.

When adding an image to a journal entry, you may also want to use an LJ-Cut tag to hide the image behind a link. This can reduce problems caused by improperly formed HTML or large images.

If you just want to add a user picture for your journal, see the userpic FAQ

» What are user pictures and how do I upload them?

User pictures are icons or avatars used to represent yourself, your moods or feelings, your interests, etc. They are displayed in many locations on InsaneJournal, including your userinfo page, your journal, the friends view of people who list you as a friend, comments, support requests, and the comments pages of your entries. In certain situations, you are given the option of selecting the user picture you'd like to use, rather than only displaying your default user picture.

» Why are there errors when I try to upload a user picture?

All user pictures have a 100x100 pixel image-size limit, and a 100kb file-size limit. If your image exceeds either of those limits, InsaneJournal will not allow you to upload the picture.

Also, one of the more common problems that occurs is that the picture itself is in bitmap format (.BMP), but has been renamed to .GIF, .JPG, or .PNG format. You should try converting the picture to the proper file type.

» How do I delete a user picture I no longer want?

You will need to be logged into InsaneJournal (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml). Then, visit http://www.insanejournal.com/editpics.bml . Check the delete box next to the picture(s) that you no longer want. Save your changes and the picture(s) will be deleted.

Entries that previously used the picture(s) you deleted will show your default picture (or no picture, if you have no default picture) unless you upload a new user picture and give it the same keyword as a picture you deleted. If you give a new picture the keyword previously associated with a deleted picture, all entries and comments that showed the deleted picture before it was deleted will now show the new picture.

» Are there content restrictions for user pictures? Can my user pictures show anything I want?

Your default user picture is viewable throughout the InsaneJournal site, and unlike individual journal entries, it cannot be hidden. It is potentially available to anyone on the Internet. Therefore, we require that your default user picture be considered decent and not contain anything too graphic. Because decency is tough to define, this is generally taken on a case-by-case basis. In general, this means no graphics depicting anything sexual or violent.
