» How do I manage my Friends list?

Go to http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/edit.bml to edit your Friends list.

You can remove a listed friend by checking the "Delete?" box before saving your changes.

To add Friends and set up foreground and background colors, scroll down to the section of the page labeled "Add Friends". You can also add users to your Friends list by visiting their User Info pages and using the "Add Friend" button on the toolbar (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=17).

Usernames that appear in bold text when you view your own User Info page or someone else's mean that the user is on your Friends list. Consequently, when you view your own Friend-of list, usernames that do not appear in bold print are those of people who have added you to their Friends list, but whom you have not added back.

Usernames that are struck through indicate a user whose journal was deleted or suspended.

You have the ability to hide your Friend-of list by checking the "Hide 'Friend of' list" option in your Personal Info page (http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml). This will also hide your Member-of list. You can't, however, hide your Friends list or the list of communities you have posting access to.

USING A DOWNLOADED CLIENT:

Many clients available for download at http://www.livejournal.com/download/ may allow you to manage your Friends list. (Note that not all LiveJournal clients are supported by InsaneJournal.) For more information on your preferred client, consult its documentation or its menu options.

» What is the auto-add Friends link on the User Info page?

So long as you are logged in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml), you will see this option on everyone's User Info page. It is a small icon with a "+" symbol, located in the blue toolbar at the top of the userinfo page. When you click on that icon, you will be prompted to confirm your decision before the user is added to your Friends list (see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=16 for information on managing your Friends list).

If the user is already listed as a Friend, this button allows you to modify settings (such as colors and custom Friends groups) or to remove them from your Friends list.

» What is a "Friend All" button? How do I create one?

A "Friend All" button is a simple way for groups of people to be able to friend each other quickly. It is a small user-created form in which an InsaneJournal user can enter their own username and then when they submit - automatically friend all of the asylums or users listed within the button.

This is not an InsaneJournal feature and InsaneJournal advises all users to use caution when clicking a "Friend All" button as it may contain commands users would prefer not to use within their own journal - and as they are maintained and created by a user, InsaneJournal can only take limited responsibility for their content. Additionally, please note that friending an asylum is not the same as joining it. For more information on joining asylums please see the following FAQ [ http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=72 ].

All changes made by a "Friend All" button will be listed after they have been completed and are easily reversible. Please remember that all personal journals friended will be able to read your friendslocked entries. For more information on controlling who can read your journal entries, please read the following FAQ. [ http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63 ]

» How are custom friends groups used?

You can create up to 30 custom friends groups. They're useful in controlling which of your friends can see a journal entry (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63), or which of your friends' journal entries appear on a filtered friends page (http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/filter.bml).

For details on how to make an entry with a custom friends group security setting, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63 .

If you want to create a custom "default view" for your friends page, create a friends group called "Default View". You can add any friends that you want to it, and this will allow you to view only those specific friends when you go to your default friends page (http://www.insanejournal.com/users/exampleusername/friends/, replacing "exampleusername" with your username). This is particularly useful if you don't want to view specific friends when you go to your default friends page.

You can also view a specific group by itself. First, create a group (for example, "group1"), and then go to http://www.insanejournal.com/users/exampleusername/friends/group1/, replacing "exampleusername" with your username. Friends group names are not case-sensitive. Alternatively, you can view your groups by checking the appropriate boxes on the Friends Filter page (http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/filter.bml).

Both of these features will only work for you, and only if you are logged in, unless you specifically mark your group(s) as "public". If they are marked as "private" (the default setting), anyone else who goes to any of your group pages will see all of your friends.

If you create your custom groups from http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/editgroups.bml but use the option on one of the downloadable clients (http://www.livejournal.com/download/ Note: Not all LiveJournal clients are supported by InsaneJournal) to view them, you may need to close your client and open it again in order for it to list your newly created custom groups.

*

USING THE WEB INTERFACE:

Go to the Edit Friend Groups page (http://www.insanejournal.com/friends/editgroups.bml). If you don't remember the address of that page, an easy way to get there is to click the 3 dots after "Friends" on the blue sidebar; then you'll see a link at the bottom of the page saying "If you want to edit your friends groups, go here."

*

USING A DOWNLOADED CLIENT:

Many clients available for download include the ability to edit or create custom friends groups. For more information on your preferred client, consult its documentation or its menu options. See http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=158 for information on downloading a client. (Note: Not all LiveJournal clients are supported by InsaneJournal).

SECURITY NOTES:

If you want to delete a group and make a new group, do NOT simply rename one group to something else and change the people that are in the group. If you do, all the people in the new group can see all your old entries you made for people in the old group.

If you delete a custom group, any entries made to that group will still have the "custom" security set, but it won't be set to any particular group. The effect of this is that no one but you has permissions to view these entries; even though they are not marked private, they are effectively private. Additionally, if you recreate the group with the same name, the entries will not automatically be set to that group again. If you would like to change the security level of the entry or set it to a new custom group, you'll have to go back and edit the entry (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=2).

» How do I control who can read my journal entries? What are security settings?

You have the choice to restrict who can read your journal entries. You can even make certain entries private, so only you can read them.

You can assign a security level to an entry by using the full Update Page at http://www.insanejournal.com/update.bml?mode=full, or, after the entry is posted, by editing it (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=2).

Below the area where you type your entry, there is a dropdown list that allows you to select the security level you want to assign that entry. You may choose from Public, Private, Friends, and Custom. The Custom option will not appear if you have not defined any custom friends groups (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=62).

At this time, there is no way to change the security level of your entire journal with one command. Instructions on how you can make your journal Friends-Only or Private can be found at http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=32 .

The security levels operate as follows:

PUBLIC:
Anyone, whether logged in or not, may read entries that are marked Public.

PRIVATE:
Only the user who posts an entry marked Private can read that entry.
If you are logged in and viewing the friends page of someone who lists you as a friend, your private entries will appear on that page when you are viewing it, because you have access to them, but no one else who views the friends page of your friend will see your private posts.

FRIENDS:
Only you and people that you list as a friend can read entries marked Friends, and only while logged in. If someone adds you to their Friends list, that will not allow them to view your Friends-Only entries. See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=64 for details.

CUSTOM:
Custom security allows you to post to only certain groups of people on your Friends list. These groups are completely customizable. See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=62 for details.

The authentication is done with cookies. If you're logged in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) and you have access to see a certain post, it will appear with a textual or graphic indicator of its security level.

USING THE WEB INTERFACE:

The InsaneJournal web update client supports custom friends group security when posting entries. However, to be able to use it, you need to make sure that the browser you are using to update with is capable of running JavaScript. In most browsers you can set this option in either the appropriate security or preferences menus.

In the drop down listing of security levels, on the bottom you should see "Custom...". Choosing this option will make a set of checkboxes appear directly below the scroll box, one for each set of friends groups you have defined. When posting with custom security, you may choose one, some, or all of the currently defined friends groups.

Note that if you post to more than one custom friends group, anyone who is in any selected group will see the entry, not just those in all the selected groups.

KNOWN ISSUES
If you are unable to see the drop down menu for selecting a custom filter on the update page, it is likely that the issue is related to the autofill function in Firefox.

The issue of the autofill function not working correctly with the site has already been noted, and the site administrator is already working on coming up with a solution that does not compromise security but still enables the function to work. However, such development will take time, and we seek your understanding and patience until then.

The solutions to regain the ability to select a custom filter are:
- to post as private to ensure that the security of your post is not compromised and then edit the post to select the filter as this is not affected;
- to disable autofill for InsaneJournal;
- to login once using a fake account (eg. user, with password as the password) as this will store the entry so that the autofill function will not automatically work, and allow the site to work correctly for you.

USING A DOWNLOADED CLIENT:

Many clients available for download include the ability to set security levels for journal entries. For more information on your preferred client, consult its documentation or its menu options. See http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=158 for information on downloading a client. (Note: Not all LiveJournal clients are supported by InsaneJournal).

While you can restrict who is allowed to read your journal, it is not possible to know exactly who is visiting your journal. You can, however, add a hit counter provided by a third party. To find a source for the counter, you will need to locate one that does not include the use of a scripting language (For more information about this restriction, please see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=42).

» If someone lists me as a friend, will they see my Friends-Only entries?

No. In order for someone to see your Friends-Only entries you must add him or her to your Friends list and he or she must be logged in.

There is no other way for someone to see your Friends-Only entries. If someone adds you to their Friends list, for example, that does not enable them to see your Friends-Only entries. Note that if you are logged in then you will still be able to see these entries on the Friends pages of such people. This, however, does not mean that they can also see the entries.

For a more complete explanation of how the security settings work, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63 .

» Can I make my whole journal Friends-only or Private?

InsaneJournal doesn't yet provide any means to change all of your past journal entries from Public to Friends-only or Private with one command. You must edit each post (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=2), changing the security level on each individual entry. See http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63 for details about the various security settings.
