» Why should I purchase a Self-committed [paid] account?

InsaneJournal will remain as a free service. However, if you enjoy using the service of this site and would like to greatly help us, you can purchase a Self-committed [paid] account. To thank you for your support, these upgraded accounts will receive numerous benefits and complete access to many features on this site [http://www.insanejournal.com/site/].

» How do I buy a Permanently Insane account?

Purchasing a Permanently Insane account is a great way to show your support for InsaneJournal. These upgraded accounts also offer a variety of additional features not available to the Free Patient and Early Inmate accounts.

Simply visit the Payment Area and select the item that you would like to purchase.

You can also choose to purchase an upgraded account for someone else. If you would just like to help the site without buying an account/paid time, you can also donate to us!

InsaneJournal now accepts PayPal, checks, money orders, and cash (though not recommended) for your convenience. For now, please make out all payments to Jason Vervlied.

Please note that Permanently Insane accounts are not always available for purchase.

» How do I buy a Self-committed account for someone else?

To purchase a "Self-committed" [paid] account for another user, go to http://www.insanejournal.com/pay/ , select "Gift for existing user" as the item you are purchasing, and type in the recipient's username of your gift. Add this to your order, select your payment method, and click the button to check out.

To purchase a Self-committed account for a non-user (someone without an account), go to http://www.insanejournal.com/pay/ , select "Email redemption code to:" and enter either their/your e-mail address (the redemption code, once used, will create the paid account for whatever amount of time you selected, not depending on the e-mail address you entered). Add this to your order, select your payment method, and click the button to check out.

If you would like to purchase a Self-committed account for a Friend, but are unsure as to which Friend would most appreciate it, you can visit http://www.insanejournal.com/paidaccounts/friends.bml . This page easily shows you which of your Friends have Free Patient accounts and which have Self-committed accounts that are expiring soon, so you can choose the best recipient for your gift. On this page, Self-committed accounts "expiring soon" are accounts that are expiring within 6 months.

» How do I check my InsaneJournal e-mail?

As an added benefit for our "Self-committed" [paid] and Permanently Insane account holders, InsaneJournal offers a neat e-mail alias system. When you have a Self-committed or Permanently Insane account, people can send mail to your @insanejournal.com e-mail address, which is in the form of exampleusername@insanejournal.com , where "exampleusername" should be replaced with your username.

Any mail sent to your exampleusername@insanejournal.com address will be forwarded to whatever e-mail address you have listed on your Edit Personal Information page (http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml). There is no added mailbox to check, no POP3 server to connect to, and no extra hassle of setting up another e-mail account.

As an added security measure, you can select the level of visibilty of your e-mail addresses, as seen on your User Info page (http://www.insanejournal.com/userinfo.bml). On the Edit Personal Information page (http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml), look for the option labeled "Show your contact information on your InsaneJournal?", and choose the privacy settings that suit you best.

If wanted, you can completely disable your @insanejournal.com e-mail alias by logging in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml), going to the Admin Console (http://www.insanejournal.com/admin/console/), and executing the following command:

set no_mail_alias 1

You can re-enable your @insanejournal.com e-mail alias by executing the following command:

set no_mail_alias 0

» Is JavaScript or Flash allowed in my styles?

Neither JavaScript or Flash are allowed in your customized styles because they can involve security problems.

Since users can log in to InsaneJournal and have their username/password saved, if we allowed either JavaScript or Flash, people could write scripts to intercept the username/password and save it, or e-mail it to the malicious script author. We've looked into solutions to allow JavaScript and Flash, but there seems to be no good way to prevent them from having access to the cookies on your computer which store this information.

If you know of a robust way for us to allow JavaScript or Flash, please let us know! For now, however, all JavaScript and Flash is removed from journal styles and overrides before it's sent to any browser.

» How do I make a custom mood theme?

InsaneJournal's Official Asylum for mood themes can be found at [http://moodthemes.insanejournal.com/].

Early Inmate, Self-committed [paid] and Permanently Insane account holders have the ability to create and edit their own custom moodthemes. InsaneJournal is currently not in need of any new moodthemes, but if you would still like to submit one for public use, please visit the Official Asylum mentioned above.

First, all the images that will be used in the mood theme must be uploaded to a webspace provider that allows remote loading [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=47]. One mood image can be used for multiple moods, so there's no need to create 133 images for every single mood. It is recommended that you save the image filenames to correspond to their primary moods (for example: happy.gif). It is also encouraged to use transparent backgrounds for the images, so that they can be used on a variety of different backgrounds.

There are currently two methods for creating custom mood themes. The Custom Mood Theme Editor [http://www.insanejournal.com/manage/moodthemes.bml] is the newer method, which allows users to directly assign images to every mood.

The second method is by using the Admin Console [http://www.insanejournal.com/admin/console/].

Please note that you cannot delete a custom mood theme that has been created by using the Admin Console. Only the Custom Mood Theme Editor will allow you to delete your custom mood theme. Instructions for creating a moodtheme using the Admin Console can be found at [http://www.insanejournal.com/doc/html/moodicons.bml].

When you have finished creating your mood theme, you can view it at [http://www.insanejournal.com/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=THEMEID&ownerid=OWNERID], replacing THEMEID with your mood theme ID number and OWNERID with your user ID number. Your user ID number can be found on your userinfo page [http://www.insanejournal.com/userinfo.bml], right beside your username.

» How do I add a poll into my journal entries?

You must either be an Early Inmate, "Self-committed" [paid] or Permanently Insane account holder in order to create any polls on InsaneJournal.

For information on the different account types, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=27 . For information on the benefits of a Self-committed account, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=10 . For information on how to purchase a Self-committed or Permanently Insane account, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8 .

Early Inmates and paid users have access to creating polls in their own journals, as well as in any community journals (whether free or paid) that they have posting access to. Free Patients may only vote in the polls.

To create a poll, visit the following:

The Poll Creator (http://www.insanejournal.com/poll/create.bml)

The Poll Creator will conveniently generate your poll's coding for you, based on your specifications. You then simply copy and paste the code into a brand new journal entry.

Read the rest of this FAQ if you require further understanding of how to put together your polls, question types, use, and poll attributes. With the below information, you may also choose to write the code for your poll manually, instead of using the poll creator. Either method will work fine.

When writing a journal entry, you can tell the InsaneJournal servers that you want to start a poll by inserting the <lj-poll> tag. When the server parses this tag, it knows to display a poll based on the questions (<lj-pq>; "poll questions") and possible answers (<lj-pi>; "poll items") you provide. However, to make sure your poll displays properly, you need to provide a closing tag for every opening tag you declare.

A very basic poll would follow like so:

<lj-poll>

<lj-pq type=radio>
What is your name?
<lj-pi>Sir Launcelot of Camelot</lj-pi>
<lj-pi>Sir Robin of Camelot</lj-pi>
<lj-pi>Arthur, King of the Britains</lj-pi>
</lj-pq>

</lj-poll>

Each tag has different attributes, for example, a poll can be named by including the following attribute: <lj-poll name="My First Poll">

Different attributes defined:
----------------------------------
<lj-poll> (beginning poll tag)

name="..."
Labels the poll with a descriptive, easy to remember name.

whovote="all(default),friends"
Specifies who is allowed to vote in your poll; options include any InsaneJournal user (all), or just the people on your friends page (friends).

whoview="all(default),friends,none"
Specifies who is allowed to view who voted for what choices in your poll; options include either any InsaneJournal user (all), just the people on your friends page (friends), or no one (none). Depending on the security level of the post that the poll resides in, people might be able to see the statistical data (percentages and bar graphs) of the poll, even if this option is specified as "none".

Ex:

<lj-poll name="The Bridge of Death" whovote="friends" whoview="all">
(This starts a poll named the "The Bridge of Death", where only the people on your friends list can vote. Anyone can see the raw data.)

<lj-pq> (poll question)

type="check,drop,radio,scale,text"

Ex:

<lj-pq type=text>
"What is your quest?"
</lj-pq>

Question Type specifications (<lj-pq type="?">)
-----------------------------------
type="radio"
Each item listed as a possible answer will have a radio button next to it, which means that people can only select one possible answer. At least one <lj-pi>possible answer</lj-pi> must be specified per each "radio" question.

type="check"
Each item listed as a possible answer will have a check box next to it, which means that multiple choices may be selected. At least one <lj-pi>possible answer</lj-pi> must be specified per each "check" question.

type="drop"
Each item listed as a possible answer will be displayed in a drop down selection box, so that only one answer may be viewable after selection. At least one <lj-pi>possible answer</lj-pi> must be specified per each "drop" question.

type="text"
Displays a box that allows a person to freely type in a string of text as their answer. When a text input question is declared, there are no possible choices to be displayed (<lj-pi>).
Text has 2 possible attributes, "size" and "maxlength". Example, size="30" will display a 30 character wide input box, while maxlength="50" will limit the voters' answers to 50 characters each.
The limit for the "size" is 100. The limit for "maxlength" is 255.

type="scale"
Displays seperate numeric options based on the information specified. Voters are typically expected to be ranking or rating something, based on a number scale given.
If absolutely no attributes (discussed below) are specified, it will be assumed that a straight from 1 to 10 choice is desired.
Scale has 3 possible attributes, "from", "to", and "by", which defines the range of the question. "from" is the beginning number, "to" is the finishing number (which is required to be greater than the "from"), and "by" is the value of units in between each choice; this value must be at least 1 or greater.
For example, if you want to make one of your questions "How old is old?" and wanted to include choices between 40 - 100, but only want choices in increments of 5 (eg 40, 45, 50, etc), you would input: <lj-pq type=scale from=40 to=100 by=5>
Scale type questions must be limited to 20 possible choices per question. (eg, scale from 1 to 100 by increments of 5 is ok; scale from 1 to 100 by increments of 1 is not)
By using the scale method, the InsaneJournal servers are able to tell you interesting numerical statistics on the way people have voted, such as the median and the average.

A few things to remember:
----------------------------------

Each tag needs an appropriate closing tag.

Each <lj-pq> requires a "type" attribute.

The question text must follow immediately after the <lj-pq> tag.

<lj-pi> tags are for radio, check, and drop questions only. All possible answers are wrapped in <lj-pi> tags </lj-pi>. They are to be inserted after the question's text, but before the question's closing tag </lj-pq>

Poll tags need to be nested correctly in order to work (ie, you need to close a question before you start a new one).

You can only create a poll when you first create an entry. ie, you cannot edit an old post and include a new poll.

Polls unfortunately at this point in time can not be posted using the Rich Text Editor, and instead require use of the HTML editor.

You cannot edit a poll once it has been made.

Polls may be embedded into journal entries only -- not comments.

Each IJ user is allowed only 1 vote in a poll.
After you've voted in a poll, you can change your answer by clicking on the poll #, and then clicking the [ Fill-out Poll ] link at the top.

» How do I post by email?

Please note that this feature is available to only Self-committed [paid] and Permanently Insane users. For information on upgrading your account in order to access this feature, please consult this FAQ. A list of additional features you will gain by upgrading can be found here: (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=10).

To post via email, please enter the proper information at the mobile post settings page . Note that you will need to set at least one allowed sender address. It is highly recommended you set a PIN for identification purposes, or anyone will be able to post a journal entry to your account.

After creating a PIN, you will be able to post by sending an email to exampleusername@post.insanejournal.com with the PIN in the subject or the body of your message. It is also possible to send the email to exampleusername+PIN@post.insanejournal.com, replacing "exampleusername" with your username, and "PIN" with your PIN number.

Note that your email should be in plain text format rather than rich text or HTML format in order for it to post properly. There is no way to turn on the "Don't auto-format" option when posting through email. If you would like to keep your entry from being automatically formatted, you can use the <lj-raw> tag within your entry. More information on the <lj-raw> tag can be found here: ( http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=49).

More details can be found at the following page (http://www.insanejournal.com/manage/emailpost.bml?mode=help) at the . These instructions explain email posting in further detail, including how to post to a community, add current mood and music, and how to add an image attachment. Also, other methods of including your PIN in an email post are included within the above-mentioned page.

» What is the friends of friends feature?

The friends of friends feature is available to only Self-committed [paid] and Permanently Insane account users [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8]. This page is accessible through [http://yourusername.insanejournal.com/friendsfriends], where "yourusername" is replaced with your actual username.

Your friends of friends page shows the entries of all your friends [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=16], as well as all the listed friends of your friends. This includes entries made in communities [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=70] and from syndicated journals [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=139].

Note that the entries you will be able to view depends on their security levels [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63]. All public entries will appear on your friends of friends page. However, if there are friends-only entries made by certain users (or communities), you must be listed as their friend (or member) in order to view them. Also, private entries made by any user other than yourself will not appear.

» What happens to Self-committed accounts once they expire?

Paid account expiration has different effects on different users, depending on the status of their accounts before they became Self-committed.

If you paid to create a new journal, or if you purchased paid time for a pre-existing free account, your account status will convert back to "Free Patient" after your paid time expires.

If your account status was "Early Inmate" before you paid for your account, it will convert back to the Early Inmate status once your paid time expires. You will still have the status provisions that you had before, as outlined in [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=27].

If you have created a style for your journal, you will still be able to use that style for your journal layout. You will also be able to switch back and forth between your custom style and the system styles. However, you won't be able to modify your custom style in any way. In order to further customize your journal, you would need to either purchase additional paid time for the account or use overrides, as detailed in the FAQs. See [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqcat=customization] for information on customization, or [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8] for information on purchasing paid time.

If you have created a custom mood theme [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=44], you will still be able to use that mood theme, but you will no longer be able to edit it.

If you have uploaded 10 user pictures [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=1], they will remain visible in all old entries or comments that you made using that user picture. However, the database will tag your least-used icons as "inactive" -- you will not be able to choose to use those pictures in the future, on new comments or entries, until your account status changes again. Also, if you want to add a new picture, you will be required to delete some of the existing pictures in order to be at the correct number for your account status [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=87].

If you have paid for Extra Icons while owning a paid account, the additional icons will be disabled until you pay for your account once more. For further information on how Extra icons work, please visit the following [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=147].

If you have subscribed to any syndicated accounts [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=120], then you will still be able to view them all on your friends page. In order to add a new syndicated account, however, you will be required to unsubscribe from some of the syndicated accounts you are watching in order to be far enough below the quota for your account type to add the new syndicated account [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=118].

After your paid time has expired, you can still use any unused invitation codes you generated while you had paid status. For more information on invitation codes, see [http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=28].

To see when your paid account time expires, log in [http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml], and then visit [http://www.insanejournal.com/userinfo.bml].

» How does the text messaging feature work?

"Self-committed" [paid] and Permanently Insane account holders now have the option of letting visitors send them text messages on their cellphone or pager. The cool part about this is that:

* Your cell/pager number stays secret. Only InsaneJournal knows it, and uses it to send you text messages from other users.
* You can control who can send you text messages (anybody, registered users, or only people you list as a friend).

If you have a Self-committed or Permanently Insane account (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8), then go to the "Edit Personal Info & Settings" page at http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml .

From there you can select your cellphone or pager provider and number. If your provider isn't listed, but your service supports text messaging, please post a request in the lj_textmessage community (http://lj_textmessage.livejournal.com/) with the name of your service, and instructions on how to send text messages to it. The community can be found here: http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=lj_textmessage . InsaneJournal updated from the LiveJournal codebase, so if LiveJournal supports your service, InsaneJournal should support it as well.

If you receive text messages via e-mail, you must include the following information:

* The name of the service (be specific).
* The e-mail address which is used to send messages.
* Any limit on the length of the name of the sender, the subject, and the message.
* Any other information you may have.

If you receive text messages via a web page, you must include:

* The name of the service (be specific).
* The URL of the page, preferably of the receiving script.
* The address of the recipient (phone number? username?).
* Any limit on the length of the name of the sender, the subject, and the message.
* Any extra fields that need to be submitted.
* Any other information you may have.

They'll be more than willing to add support for it, providing that you are willing to help test the service. This will ordinarily mean that you must be willing to receive a test message and let LiveJournal know whether you received it and whether it came through properly formatted and without anything cut off, etc. There is also the possibility that in some cases, more than one test message will be required.

Important Note: Although InsaneJournal makes no extra charge for this feature, your service provider may charge for each text message you receive. Please check with your service provider for details.

» What is the Directory and how do I use it?

The Directory (http://www.insanejournal.com/directorysearch.bml) is a tool that helps users to find other users according to specific search criteria. Through the Directory, it is possible to find other users by location, age, interests, and several other criteria.

To use the Directory, you must be logged in as an Early Inmate, "Self-committed" [paid] or Permanently Insane account (see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=10 for information on Self-committed account benefits and how to purchase one). All InsaneJournal users, however, can list themselves so that users with access to the Directory can find them.

If you have recently tried adding yourself to the Directory, please keep in mind that it is not automatically updated. If you are a new user or have recently changed your settings, it can take between 3 to 12 hours for the updates to take effect. Also, you will not be able to find your listing in the Directory if you are a Free Patient, because Free Patient account holders do not have access to it.
