» How do I add my journal to my IM profile?

You can use HTML to create a link to your InsaneJournal like so:

<a href="http://www.yoursite.com/yourpage.html">Visit my journal!</a>

Your journal is available at the following URLs:

http://www.insanejournal.com/users/exampleusername
http://www.insanejournal.com/~exampleusername

If you have an Early Inmate, Self-committed [paid], or Permanently Insane account, your journal will also be available at the following URL:

http://exampleusername.insanejournal.com

Alternatively, you may embed your journal onto your profile by adding the following HTML to your profile:

<a href="http://www.insanejournal.com/users/exampleusername" target="_self">Visit my InsaneJournal!</a>

Because InsaneJournal is not affiliated with any instant messaging service, we cannot provide any additional support regarding this issue. Please consult your instant messaging service's documentation of technical support area for more information.

» How do I embed my InsaneJournal into my website?

Instructions for embedding your InsaneJournal into your website can be found at http://www.insanejournal.com/developer/embedding.bml .

Early Inmate, "Self-committed" [paid] and Permanently Insane account holders can use any of the methods listed at that page to embed their journal into their website and can use customview.cgi to customize the appearance of their embedded journal by creating a custom style, as explained at http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=43 .

Free Patient account holders can only embed their journal using the HTML frames method (http://www.insanejournal.com/developer/embedding.bml?method=frameslayers) and are limited to using the same style for both their journal on InsaneJournal and their embedded journal. If you have a Free Patient account, but would like to be able to customize your embedded journal or use the other embedding methods, you will need to purchase paid time (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8).

» How do I change the appearance of my embedded journal?

Depending on your account type, there are different levels of modification you can make to your embedded journal.

If you have a Free Patient account, your embedded journal will display in the same style as your journal on InsaneJournal. More information on changing the appearance of your InsaneJournal can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=7 .

However, Early Inmates, and users with "Self-committed" [paid] and Permanently Insane accounts can customize their embedded journals to the same extent as they can their journals on InsaneJournal. In almost all of the methods listed at http://www.insanejournal.com/developer/embedding.bml , the style ID number "101" is used. Style 101 contains hard-coded colors and does not contain comment links, which some users find limiting when attempting to embed their journal into their website.

If you are an Early Inmate, or have a Self-committed or Permanently Insane account, your embedded journal can have any look that you want, using custom styles (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=43) . When creating a style to use for embedding, be sure to check the box at the top of the page marked "Embedding?".

Once you have created the style, you will need to replace the "101" in the embedding URL with your own unique style ID number. For example, if you wished to embed your journal using the Generator style instead of Style 101, you would replace the URL "http://www.insanejournal.com/customview.cgi?username=exampleusername&styleid=101" with "http://www.insanejournal.com/customview.cgi?username=exampleusername&styleid=9488", because "9488" is the style ID number of the Generator style.

Basic information on embedding can be found at http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=96 .

» Will my embedded journal display my Friends-Only or Private entries?

Depending on the method of embedding that you are using, your protected entries (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=63) may or may not show up. The only methods that currently support protected entries in embedded journals are HTML Frames and JavaScript.

If you are using the HTML Frames method to embed your journal and are either using your journal URL or a customview URL, anyone who wishes to view your protected posts will need to be logged into InsaneJournal with an expiration setting of "Never." They may also need to check and make sure that their browser's security settings allow third-party use of cookies.

If you are using the HTML Frames method with a customview URL or are using the JavaScript method to embed your journal, you will need to modify the customview URL that you are using to check for cookies. This can be done with the "checkcookies" parameter.
