» How do I set up message boards to get comments?

To enable commenting in your journal, go to http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml and find the option labeled "Enable message boards".

Here you can also decide several things:

-- Who can reply to your entries
-- Whose IP addresses, if any, you want to log (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=114)
-- Which comments you want screened by default (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=109)

You can also choose to receive an e-mail notification anytime someone replies to one of your entries or comments. To do this, check the box next to "Get message board replies". You can also select whether you would like to receive plain text e-mails or HTML-enhanced ones. Once you have configured your settings, you can save them by clicking the button labeled "Save Changes" towards the bottom of the page.

If you have checked this box and saved your changes, but are still not receiving comment e-mail notifications, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=115 for information on why this problem may occur and how to resolve it.

If you would ever like to stop receiving comment notifications, you can simply uncheck the "Get message board replies" box and then save your changes. After doing so, notifications will no longer be sent to you via e-mail unless you choose to have them sent again in the future.

If you'd like to customize your "comments" links, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=15 .

» What is comment screening and how do I set my screening options?

Comment screening is a method of preventing abuse, which allows account holders to control the circumstances under which comments that are left in their journals are visible to their readers.

Screened comments appear only to the user who posted the entry, the person who posted the comment, and, if the entry was made in an asylum, the maintainer of that asylum. If you are not logged in, you will not to be able to see screened comments.

To set up your account's screening options, visit the Manage Comments page, where there is an option labelled: "Comment screening". In this drop down box, you can select the type of accounts you wish to screen. If there is one particular user whose comments you do not want to appear on your journal, you may wish instead to ban them.

Once you have established these settings, comments made by users who fall into the category you have selected will be screened by default. When you view your Recent Entries page while logged in, the link indicating how many comments a journal entry has will only list the number of unscreened comments. If an entry has only screened comments, the link to read comments will appear with the entry, but it will indicate that there are 0 (zero) comments. This will not be visible to other people who view your Recent Entries page.

When you click on the link to view your journal entry, you will see the entry with all of its comments. The title bar will have a blue background for unscreened comments and a grey background for screened comments.

» Can I edit/delete/screen a comment I posted or that was posted in my journal?

Although journal entries can be edited OR deleted (see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=2), comments on journal entries can ONLY be deleted or screened, not edited.

You can delete a comment if one of the following is true:

1) You posted the comment yourself.
2) Someone else posted the comment in your journal.
3) Someone else posted the comment in a community journal which you maintain.
4) You, or someone else, posted the comment to an entry you made in a community journal.

Depending on where the comment is, you must be logged in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) as the poster of the comment, the owner of the journal, or the maintainer of the community to delete a comment.

To delete a comment, click the button with the red "X" on it, and confirm your intention to delete the comment. The next page you will get some options on what to do when deleting the comment.

If the comment is from an anonymous user, you will see the following options. (descriptions of the options are listed below).

1.) Mark this comment as spam
2.) Delete thread (all subcomments)

If the comment is from a regisered user you will see the following options

1.) Ban [exampleusername] from commenting in your journal
2.) Mark this comment as spam
3.) Delete thread (all subcomments)

If the comment is one of your own comments, you will see the following option

1.) Delete thread (all subcomments)

The option for Delete thread (all subcomments) allows you to not only delete the comment you have selected, but all comments that are replies to the comment you are deleting

The option for Mark this comment as spam will send a report to the administrators of InsaneJournal allowing us to track and subsequently block and IP addresses who are using the InsaneJournal commenting system for bulk advertising.

The option for Ban [exampleusername] from commenting in your journal allows you to prevent a specific InsaneJournal user from posting comments in your journal entries. If you wish to allow this user to comment in your journal in the future, you will need to go to [http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml]. There is an option on this page that allows you to remove banned users.

You can screen a comment if one of the following is true:

1) Someone else posted the comment in your journal.
2) Someone else posted the comment in a community journal which you maintain.
3) You, or someone else, posted the comment to an entry you made in a community journal.

Depending on where the comment is, you must be logged in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) as the owner of the journal, or the maintainer of the community to screen a comment.

To screen a comment, click the eye icon with the red line through it, and confirm your intention to screen the comment. If the screening is successful, you will be taken to a page that reports the success. Full details on the comment screening option can be viewed at http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=109 . To unscreen a screened comment, click the eye icon (which doesn't have a red line through it), and confirm your intention to unscreen the comment.

If you wish to delete, screen, or unscreen more than one comment at a time, you can use the "Mass Action" option at the bottom of the comment page. Select the comments you wish to perform the action upon by checking the boxes at the right of the eye icon, and then use the drop down box at the bottom of the page to select the action you wish to perform. Confirm your choice by clicking the "Perform Action" button.

When you use the "Mass Action" option, you will not receive a confirmation screen as you would if you chose to perform the actions on comments individually. Be especially careful when choosing to mass delete comments, as there is no way to retrieve them once they have been deleted.

» How do I disable commenting in my journal?

To disable commenting in your journal, go to http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml and uncheck the option labeled "Enable message boards," which is found near the bottom of the page, then click "Save Changes".

You also have the option to disable comments on individual entries, while leaving commenting enabled for the rest of your journal. Using the web client, you can do this from the full version of the Update Journal page at http://www.insanejournal.com/update.bml?mode=full . While posting or editing the entry, check the box marked "Disallow Comments" to disable comments on that entry only. If you are disabling comments on an entry that already has comments, these comments will then become invisible.

Many clients available for download include the ability to disable commenting on individual entries. For more information on your preferred client, consult its documentation or its menu options.

If you would like to block comments from a particular person, but still receive comments from others, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=112 .

If you would like to keep comments enabled, but want to stop receiving notification e-mails, see http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=108 .

» How do I ban/unban a user from commenting in my journal?

If you're having problems with a certain user, but you'd still like to allow comments by other people who aren't on your Friends List, you can ban the specific user from posting comments in your journal. To be effective, you should also prevent anonymous commenting, as described in http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=113 .

To ban a user:

* After you delete a comment from any InsaneJournal user, a checkbox shows up that lets you ban them. If that is selected, that user will be unable to leave further comments in your journal.

* If you want to ban a specific InsaneJournal user without having to delete one of their comments, you can ban them using the Admin Console (http://www.insanejournal.com/admin/console/). First, make sure you are already logged in, then go to the console and enter this command:

ban_set <user>

Do not enter the < or > symbols; these are only for reference purposes. Replace <user> with the username of the person you want to ban.

To unban a user:

* Go to http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml (where you can also control lots of other options). Look for the "Unban Users" section near the bottom of the page. Check off the username of the user you want to unban and click "Save Changes".

* You can also use the Admin Console (http://www.insanejournal.com/admin/console/) to unban a user. First, make sure you are already logged in, then go to the console and enter this command:

ban_unset <user>

Do not enter the < or > symbols; these are only for reference purposes. Replace <user> with the username of the person you want to unban.

» How do I prevent anonymous people from commenting in my journal?

Go to the Manage Comments page and find the option labeled "Enable Commenting From?". You will need to adjust this setting in order to prevent anonymous comments in your journal.

Alternatively, you could choose to screen anonymous comments by default.

» What is Comment IP Logging? What do you mean, "this user is logging my IP address"?

As an anti-abuse/harassment feature, InsaneJournal account holders can choose to log the IP addresses of users who comment in their journals. Logging can be enabled for "Anonymous posters only" or "Always", or it can be left disabled by choosing "No". You can select the option you want at http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml under InsaneJournal Options.

An IP address is the numerical equivalent of a domain name: the unique address of a computer connected to the internet. Most providers assign IP numbers on a random basis from their set of addresses upon connection; most likely, if you have a static IP address (which is always the same), you already know and have probably paid a premium for that service. Domain name servers convert a domain name, such as insanejournal.com, to an IP address, such as 66.150.15.150.

The IP address is not harmful, and does not point directly to the poster's home or telephone number. It will, however, allow the recipient of a comment to identify the poster's Internet service provider (ISP). By comparing logs and timestamps, the ISP may be able to determine from where the comment was posted.

There are official "Whois" sites which allow you to query the IP address. To find one of these, perform a query for "whois database search" in your favorite search engine.

The only people who can see the logged IP numbers are the owners of the journals in which the comments appear (or the owners of entries in Community Journals to which comments have been made). The owner must be logged in (http://www.insanejournal.com/login.bml) to see the IP numbers, which appear to the right of the timestamp on the comment in question.

IP addresses are recorded only while logging is enabled. You cannot retroactively view IP addresses of users who left comments while logging was turned off.

» Where are my comment notification e-mails?

At http://www.insanejournal.com/editinfo.bml you can check that you have entered a valid e-mail address for use with your account. This address should also be validated, as is explained in the FAQ "How do I validate my e-mail address?" (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=12).

If the e-mail address you've entered is correct, check to make sure that you have message boards enabled and that you have selected the checkbox labeled "Get message board replies" (http://www.insanejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=108). Save your settings and see if this corrects the problem. If you've chosen to receive HTML e-mails, and are still not getting any notifications, try turning this option off.

If the above solution doesn't work, and you haven't exceeded your e-mail account size allocation, then it is very likely the problem is on your receiving mail server's end. Check the spam and junk mail filters on your e-mail account. Adjust them to allow for e-mail from ij_notify@insanejournal.com . If everything is in working order with your account, check with your ISP/mail provider and tell them that you're not getting e-mail.

Many providers are not aware of their mail filters. The most popular mail transport package, "sendmail", comes with mail filters enabled by default that appear to block some InsaneJournal comment e-mail. You should let your provider know that you are not receiving e-mail, and ask that they adjust their sendmail filters.

» Why are my comments showing an incorrect time?

The timestamps on comments in journals using S1 display in the timezone of the InsaneJournal servers, which is US Pacific Standard Time (-800 GMT) or, when applicable, US Pacific Daylight Time (-700 GMT). The timestamps on comments in journals using S2 display using the GMT timezone. The times on comments are automatically assigned when they are posted; there is no way to set or edit the time on a comment.

When viewing comments anywhere on InsaneJournal, you will need to take into account this time difference in order to work out the local time at which the comment was posted.
